Conference summary

The 2-day conference aims at having a critical dialogue over the discourseof photography amongst the contemporary photography practitioners, writers,critics, art historians, curators fromall over the world. The conference willalso involve a discussion on the practice of photography as a medium ofexpression in Indian apparatus.

On or before 30^th January 2012,we invite delegates to register themselves to attend the 2-day of conference atNID premises. We encourage all the photography enthusiasts, early careerscholars, to register for the same at the earliest. Speakers Profile

Nayland Blake

NaylandBlake is an artist whose mixed-mediawork has been variously described as disturbing, provocative, elusive,tormented, sinister, hysterical, brutal, and tender. Among his most famouspieces are a log cabinmade of gingerbreadsquares fitted to a steel frame entitled Feeder 2 (1998). When it wenton display at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, visitors furtivelynibbled off bits and pieces of the cabin’s interior walls, while the smell ofthe gingerbread filled the gallery.Another well-known work is Starting Over(2000), a video of the artist dancing with taps on his shoes in a bunny suit made to weigh the same as his lover,Philip Horvitz. The suit was so heavy that Blake could hardly move as he took choreographic directions from Horvitz offstage.Gorge (1998) is a videoof the artist sitting shirtless being hand fed an enormous amount of food foran hour by a shirtless black man from behind. In 2009, a live version of Gorgewas staged in which audience members fed Blake.

Dr.Deepak John Mathew
A design teacher and a practicing photographer lives and works in India. Deepak John Mathew is teaching at the National Institute of Design (NID). He has an experience spanning over 20 years in professional photography, painting and graphics.He holds a master's degree in FineArts (Graphic Arts) from the M.S. University, Vadodara and has a PhD in Design Education from the Center for Advanced Studiesin Education, M.S. University, Vadodara. He has been instrumental indesigning and developing the dual postgraduate program in Photography Design. He also set up the Photography Design discipline and started an International Postgraduate Certificate Program inPhotography at the institute in collaboration with University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, UK.Deepak has curated a number ofexhibitions at NID, including thosefeaturing the works of famed photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Anne Maniglier, and Raghu Rai. He has receivedmany awards including the Commonwealth Fellowship for Photography (2011) and exhibited his works at many international andnational exhibitions and has authored several papers. He has written a bookcalled, Principles of Design through Photography. He has alsobeen contributing to various NID publications. He has been invited asvisiting faculty, lecturer, externalevaluator, mentor, and advisor to variousuniversities and institutes all over the world. Besides photography, Deepak's interests include history of art, color&form,and illustration.

Sunil Gupta

Born in New Delhi, and growing upwatching Bollywood films in all their glorious colour, Sunil Gupta moved toMontreal with his family in the late 1960s, where his interest in photographybegan to develop. From the mid-1970s he lived in New York, where he studiedphotography at the New School for Social Research under Lisette Model. At theend of the 1970s, he moved to London to continue his studies at the West SurreyCollege of Art and Design, Farnham, and the Royal College of Art, London. Hewas involved in the founding of Autograph (Association of Black Photographers)in London, and he also set up the Organization for Visual Arts (OVA) to promotea greater understanding of questions regarding cultural differences and theirincorporation into the sphere of fine art. He works as a photographer, writerand curator out of London and Delhi

Sabeena Gadihoke

SabeenaGadihoke is Associate Professor of Video andTelevision Production at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at JamiaUniversity in New Delhi and is also an independent documentary filmmaker andcameraperson. Her book Camera Chronicles on India’s first woman pressphotographer, Homai Vyarawalla was published in 2006. She is currently workingon her dissertation on a cultural history of photography in India during 1945-1970.

Radhika Singh

When Radhika Singh set upFotomedia in 1988, it was the first photo-library in Delhi to store, promoteand market photographs. Radhika Singh had no experience in running her ownenterprise. What she did have were three degrees -- a B.A. in English, an M.A.in Social Work, an M.Phil in Sociology -- and stints in modelling andtheatre.She has an M.Phil in Sociology, been a model, is active in theatre, hasdabbled in social work and is a successful entrepreneur. But for someone withher range of interests, Radhika Singh is a remarkably focussed woman. In lessthan 10 years, 42-year-old Singh has taken her outfit, Fotomedia, from anoddball little venture to a still-unusual, but profit-making, enterprise.

Neeta Madahar

Neeta Madahar received her MFAfrom the Museum School at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2003. As a Britishcitizen of Indian descent who has lived and worked in the U.S., Madaharconstantly refers to themes of migration and transition throughout her work.Madahar's thesis project entitled Sustenance gained immediate interest and wasshown at the Arles Festival curated by Martin Parr in 2005, followed by showsin Boston, London, and Germany. In this project, Madahar examines thecomplexities of the domestic environment through her exploration of the variousbird species that gather to feed at her home in Framingham, Massachusetts.Using a large-format camera, Madahar juxtaposes contrasting ideas offamiliarity and strangeness, belonging and migration, and prolonged routine andrepetition.

Karen Knorr

Karen Knorr, anAmerican was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and was raised in San JuanPuerto Rico in the 1960s. She finished her education in Paris and Londongraduating from the University of Westminster in 1980 with a first inPhotography and Filmic Art. Karen has taught, and lectured internationallyincluding The Sorbonne,Paris, Goldsmiths College, London,Harvard University and The Art Institute of Chicago in the U.S.After graduating from the University of Westminster inthe mid 1970’s, Knorr exhibited photography that addressed debates in culturalstudies and film theory concerning the “politics of representation” practiceswhich emerged during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Karen Knorr is currentlyProfessor of Photography at the University for the Creative Arts at Farnham,Surrey and lives in London.

Anna Fox

Anna Fox first gainedattention for Work Stations: Office Life in London (1988), a study of officeculture in Thatcher's Britain, originally commissioned by Camerawork and TheMuseum of London. She is best known for Zwarte Piet (1993-8), a series of twentyportraits taken over a five-year period that explore Dutch 'black-face' folktraditions associated with Christmas. The images of costumed revellers, posedin the manner reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, have beenwidely exhibited internationally. Other projects have included The Village(1992), a multi-media collaboration with the writer Val Williams, examining theexperiences of rural women, Country Girls, a collaboration withsinger/songwriter Alison Goldfrapp portraying a fairytale nightmare vision oflife in the country for young women, and Friendly Fire, which records theleisure activity of paint-balling in the manner of war reportage. More recentpublications include Cockroach Diary and My Mother's Cupboards and My Father'sWords (2000), which deal with autobiographical narratives and were designed asminiature, limited edition books. Her work has been exhibited and publishedinternationally and she is now Professor of Photography at the UniversityCollege of the Creative Arts, Farnham and has been part of the UCA team whohave worked with Dr Deepak John Mathew to develop the PG Diploma in PhotographyDesign at NID.

AnnuPalakunnathu Matthew

Annu Palakunnathu Matthew is Professor of Art(Photography) at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island.Matthew’s recent exhibitions include Sepia International, New York City,the RISD Museum, Newark Art Museum, Newark, NJ, 2009 GuangzhouBiennial of Photography, China, 2006 Noorderlicht Photo Festival inNetherlands and the 2005 Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal Photo Biennale inCanada.Among the list of grants recently supporting Matthew‘s work include theJohn Gutmann Fellowship, MacColl Johnson Fellowship, Rhode Island State Councilof the Arts Fellowship and the American Institute of Indian Studies CreativeArts fellowship. Her work can be found in the collection of the George EastmanHouse, Fogg Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Center for CreativePhotography and the RISD Museum among others. Matthew’s work is included in thebook BLINK from Phaidon, that according to the publisher celebrates the qualityand vision of today's 100 most exciting international contemporary photographersand the upcoming books The Digital Eye by Sylvia Wolf and Self-Portraitsby Susan Bright.

Pablo Bartholomew

Pablo Bartholomew isan independent photographer based in New Delhi, India Represented by GammaLiaison for over 20 years, he worked as a photojournalist recording societies in conflict and transition. His works havebeen published in the New York Times, Newsweek, Time,Business Week, National Geographic and GEO,amongst other prestigious magazines and journals. Pablo Bartholomew at the ageof 19 won the World Press Photo award for his series on Morphine Addicts in India (1975) and the WorldPress Photo of the Year for the Bhopal Gas Tragedy(1984).

David Moore

Based in London, David Moore hasbeen a practicing photographer since 1989 after graduating from West SurreyCollege of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited nationally andinternationally, including group shows in 2010 at the Thessaloniki Photo-Biennaleand Les Photaumnales in Beauvais, France. The Last Things, a publicationand touring solo exhibition, travelled to Wolverhampton Art Gallery, BelfastExposed, Impressions Gallery Bradford and UH Galleries, Hertfordshire, 2008-09.Moore’s work is held in public and private collections including NuffieldCollege Collection, Oxford University; the Ranstad Collection, The Netherlands;and, the Ministry of Defence Art Collection, London. David Moore is currentlySenior Photography Lecturer at Central Saint Martins College, London.

AbhishekPoddar

AbhishekPoddar is the director of Bangalore based gallery, Tasveer. Dedicated topromoting and showcasing photography in all its forms, Tasveer has created anetwork of galleries between Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.Since its inaugural show in October 2006, over 100 exhibitions have been heldand the also gallery organizes lectures, workshops and other educational activities,both in India and abroad.

Nandini Valli

Born in 1976, Nandini Valli wasraised in Chennai, India where she continues to live. She completed severaldegrees before entering the field of photography. After an 18 monthapprenticeship with a leading commercial photographer in Chennai, Nandinidecided to pursue a B.A Honours in Photography from the Arts Institute atBournemouth, UK (now known as the Arts University College Bournemouth). This iswhere she realized she was more suited to producing art photography as opposedto commercial photography.

Anusha Yadav

Anusha S. Yadav, born in London, is a Mumbaibased Urban Documentary Photographer. She was bought up London and later inJaipur, Rajasthan India. She graduated in Communication Design from the National Institute of Design inAhmedabad in 1997. Anusha’s interest in photography began while still at designschool. Subsequently, she attended University of Brighton to study photographyfor a semester.After thirteen years of a successful career in graphic designand advertising, Anusha began working as an independent editorial anddocumentary photographer in 2006 in India. Since then she has photographedseveral well known personalities and significant events all over the country.

Johny ML

Johny ML is a Delhi based art critic andcurator. With twenty years of experience, JohnyML has done several national andinternational art projects successfully. Founding editor of www.mattersofart.com and www.artconcerns.com, JohnyML has initiated and executed projectslike Finding a Lost Culture and Tradition (FALCAT 2009), Vibrant Gujarat(2009), Video Wednesdays@Gallery Espace (2009), Expressions at Tihar (2009). Hehas curated several shows and directed documentaries on contemporary artists.

Prasant Panjiar

Prashant Panjiar is a self-taughtphotographer. A post-graduate in Political Science from Pune University, India,he worked on photographic projects focusing on peasant movements and othersocial issues through his college and university days. His first self-financedproject that received acclaim was his work for a book on banditry in theChambal region of Central India. As one of India’s senior photojournalists andpicture editors, Panjiar is actively involved in guiding young photographers.He is one of the three senior photographers who select and mentor youngdocumentary photographers for National Foundation of India’s fellowshipprogramme. Panjiar served on the jury of the World Press Photo Awards inAmsterdam in 2002, the China International Press Photo Competition in 2005 andthe Indian Express Press Photo Awards.

Shahidul Alam

A photographer, writer, curator and activist,Shahidul Alam obtained a PhD in chemistry at London University before switchingto photography. He returned to his hometown Dhaka in 1984, where hephotographed the democratic struggle to remove General Ershad. A former president of the BangladeshPhotographic Society, Alam set up the award winning Drik agency, the BangladeshPhotographic Institute and Pathshala, the South Asian Institute of Photography,considered one of the finest schools of photography in the world. Director ofthe Chobi Mela festival and chairman of Majority World agency, Alam’s work hasbeen exhibited in galleries such as MOMA in New York, the Centre GeorgesPompidou in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and The Museum ofContemporary Arts in Tehran. He has been a jury member in prestigiousinternational contests, including World Press Photo, which he chaired. AnHonorary Fellow of the Bangladesh Photographic Society and the RoyalPhotographic Society Alam is a visiting professor of Sunderland University inthe UK. He recently set up a media academy in Bangladesh.

Vivek Vilasini

Born in 1964, in Trishur, Kerala,Vivek Vilasini trained as a Marine Radio Officer at the All India MarineCollege in Kochi, and then obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Sciencefrom Kerala University in 1987 before turning to art and studying sculpturefrom traditional Indian craftspeople. Vilasini’s work has been exhibited inseveral solo shows including several editions of ‘Between One Shore and SeveralOthers’ at Birds Gallery, Trivandrum, Arushi Arts, New Delhi, Sumukha Gallery,Bangalore, and the Visual Arts Gallery, ‘In Focus: Contemporary IndianPhotography’ at Crimson - The Art Resource, Bangalore, in 2009; ‘Re-Claim/Re-Cite/ Re-Cycle’ presented by Latitude 28 at Travancore Art Gallery, NewDelhi, in 2009; ‘Metamorphosis: Change and Continuity in Indian ContemporaryArt’ at PAC Gallery, Phyllis Weston-Annie Bolling Gallery and the KrohnConservatory, Cincinnati, in 2009; ‘Bapu’ at Saffronart, Mumbai, in 2009; and‘Who Knew Mr. Gandhi?’ at Aicon Gallery, London, in 2008. The artist lives andworks in Bangalore.

Peter Sramek

Peter Sramek studied photography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Minor White and has taughtat the Ontario College of Art & Design University in Toronto since 1976,currently serving as Chair of Photography. In 1978, he became a founding memberof Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography in Toronto, one of Canada’sleading artist-run centres. His work incorporates silver photography, digitalimaging, handmade books and video installation. Represented by the StephenBulger Gallery, he is included in collections such as the Canadian Museum ofContemporary Photography, National Library of Canada, Musée Carnavalet (Paris),MOMA (NYC), Art Gallery of Hamilton, Toronto Archives and Art Gallery ofGreater Victoria. Recent solo exhibitions include theFrench Institute of Pragueand Gallery 345 (Toronto). Sramek'sblack and white silver photography currently explores European historical sitesand incorporates rephotographic strategies, working from historical archives.His handbound artist’s books are in various collections, notably the NationalLibrary of Canada and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He is currently recipient of aGoogle Research Award to develop an online/mobile presentation of hisrephotographs of Paris street views made after photographs by Charles Marvillebetween 1865 and 1877.

Magi Viljanen

Artist and photographer MagiViljanen has created a long and respective career as an art and commercialphotographer. Her photography original and stand out from the mainstream in arefreshing way. As a photographer Viljanen is unprejudiced and has chosenchallenging themes many times during her career. Bravely she has trieddifferent methods and materials in her works. "I think art is meant tomove something in a person, and at its best art affects those things thatpeople may have become numb to. I don't see myself as a subjective artist butas a part of something common, and that is way I work. I am a documentaryphotographer and I think that art that makes a statement is important."The work of Magi Viljanen is easy to approach and touching in its way to showthe truth and representation of life. All the viewers can integrate with someaspect in her pictures. Her works brings the reality of others in front of usallowing us to see true stories from this world.

Lucida

Lucida is an independent photographers' collective based out ofNew Delhi. It aims to develop and support a range of independent and criticalphotographic practices that focus on research and education. Lucida endeavorsto influence photographic thinking through a design oriented approach inphotography services.

Esa Epstein

Esa Epstein established sepia EYE in September 2009 which is dedicated to showing a spectrum of modern andcontemporary photography and video work from Asia., During her tenure as theExecutive Director and Curator of SEPIA Internationaland The Alkazi Collection (1995-2009), Esa Epstein has published eight titleson modern and contemporary photography including: Atul Bhalla: Yamuna Walk(sepiaEYE & UW Press, 2011), Jungjin Lee: Wind, essays by Eugenia Parry andVicki Goldberg (Aperture/SEPIA, 2009); Ketaki Sheth: Bombay Mix, preface bySuketu Mehta (Dewi Lewis/SEPIA, 2007); and Vivan Sundaram: Re-take of Amrita,essays by Vivan Sundaram and Wu Hung (SEPIA,2006). In her former position, Esa Epstein has helped build an impressivecollection of Indian photography and, along the way, has offered her expertiseto both private and public collections. Esa Epstein continues to offerinstitutional planning and arts management through sepia EYE.

Maniyarasan R

He is a freelance professionalphotographer with a Bachelors degree in Architecture from the SPA New Delhi,and a Masters in Photography Design from NID Ahmedabad, where he worked as anAssociate Faculty after his post graduation. He strongly believes that every challenge presents itself with abundle of opportunities, if only we have the creativity, innovation and an eyefor detail. His main interest apart from architectural and heritagedocumentation lies in capturing the essence of pure human emotions, and thesanctity and joy of weddings- moments that bind people together. Through hisvisual documentation, he has been on a constant endeavour to capture thecontext of ‘life’ in relationship to time, space and emotions. Besides, he was nominated as the‘Wedding photographer of the year’ for two consecutive years, conducted byBetter Photography and Kodak for the years 2010 and 2011.

Rahul S Ravi

Rahul S Ravi completed his Master’sin Photography Design from the National Institute of Design (NID), which isinternationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinaryinstitutions in the field of design education and research. A literaturegraduate and a graphic designer by profession, he was a passionate practicingphotographer before joining the course at NID. A humanist eye drives hisphotography and his documentation has a conceptual approach to it. Hisphotographic projects try to bring in focus socio-cultural issues that havebeen at times overlooked by the mass media. These very qualities in his work“Indian Jewish identity” made him the Second Indian to win the prestigiousTierney fellowship. He is currently working as a Teaching Associate inPhotography Design at National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad.

Maria Kapajeva

First time Maria visited India as anexchange student coming to NID and returned later as a visiting lecturer andcoordinator. Together with her personal project about Indian young women, Mariawill present the results of two collaborative international projects suchas Collective Body and Travelling Light show.Maria Kapajeva is Estonian photographer based in the UK who works forPhotography course of University for the Creative Arts (Farnham, UK) and at thesame time studies at University of Westminster (MA Photographic Studiescourse).

NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati

NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati graduated from Mt Holyoke College, Massachusetts with a degree in International Relations and Studio Art. She went on to the SALT Institute of Documentary Studies, Portland, ME to study Documentary Photography.

NayanTara came back home to Nepal in 2006 and began working as a freelance photographer and multimedia producer. Her work focuses on intimately documenting her country- ‘the New Nepal’- and its dynamic transformation from the world's last Hindu monarchy to a new democratic republic.

In 2007, NayanTara co founded photo.circle; a photography collective that has created a platform for emerging and professional photographers in Nepal.

Homai Vyarawalla Passes away

Vyarawalla captured key events that had a decisive impact on India's history, including a meeting where leaders voted for the June 3 plan for India’s partition.

India’s first woman photo-journalist Homai Vyarawalla died at a private hospital here this morning at the age of 98.

She fell from her cot three days ago and was hospitalised at a private hospital, officials said.

Her husband Maneckshaw Vyarawalla predeceased her in 1970.

Born on December 9, 1913 to a Parsi family, Vyarawalla grew up in Mumbai and moved to Delhi in 1942 where she photographed events leading to Independence, as an employee of the British Information Services.

She took photographs of key events that would have a decisive impact on Indian history, including a meeting where leaders voted for the June 3 plan for India’s partition.

She also photographed the first flag hoisting ceremony at Red Fort on August 15, 1947, the departure of Lord Mountbatten from India and the funerals of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in January last year.

Ran Rahman at NID Photography Design

Photographer Ram Rahman talked about the tradition of social documentary photography and its continuing relevance. With reference to his own work, this was a personal take on the work of Sunil Janah (india b1918), Walker Evans (USA 1903-1975), Manuel Alvarez Bravo (Mexico 1902-2002) and Brassai (France 1899-1984). Each of these photographers made a body of work which was epic in scale over many decades, strongly rooted in their own cultures. Ram talked about the nature of the medium and its documentary language. In India photojournalism has been confused with the documentary tradition which has produced what I will call the deep document. How have these photographers used a medium which is based on an optical and chemical technology common to all, yet made work which is infused with their uniquely personal cultural sensibilities?

A special highlight of the talk was on Federico Fellini and his film La Dolce Vita, and its inspiration from the 'page 3' tabloid photographers in Rome in the late 1950's, specially Tazio Secchiaroli. This is an exploration of how an artist takes from reality, the transformations they make, and how creative subjectivity enters their ouvre. Incorporating film and photography, the talk was a wide-ranging look at the relationship of photography and its role in documenting a society and its culture.

Information about Ram Rahman:

Photojournalist, artist, curator, designer and activist Ram Rahman, initially studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Later, Rahman completed a degree in Graphic Design from Yale University, School of Art in 1979.

Born in 1955, Rahman has shown his photographs in individual and group shows in India and around the world. His most recent solo shows include, 'Bioscope: Scenes from an Eventful Life' presented by Bodhi Art at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi, in 2008; Apparao Infinity, Chennai, in 2007; 'Photo Studio / Cutouts' at India International Center, New Delhi, in 2003; and 'Visions of India: Photographs by Ram Rahman' at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, in 2002. Amongst his group shows, the most recent are 'Still Moving Images' at the Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon, in 2008; 'Click: Contemporary Photography from India' at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2007; 'I Fear, I Believe, I Desire' at Gallery Espace, New Delhi, also in 2007; and 'Middle Age Spread' at the National Museum, New Delhi, in 2004. Amongst the shows Rahman has curated are 'Heat : Moving Pictures Visions, Phantasms and Nightmares' at Bose Pacia, New York, in 2003; and 'Sunil Janah Photographs, A Retrospective' at Gallery 678, New York, in 1998.

Rahman is one of the founding members of the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) in New Delhi, a leader in the resistance to communal and sectarian forces in India through its public cultural action. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.

The photographs in this exhibition are an evocation of princely India and a historical record of an age we will never again experience. Each portrait reflects an unmistakeable aura of majesty, effortlessly carried and eloquently captured. Vacheron Constantin, who have supported this exhibition have a lot in common with the rich heritage that the show portrays. For over 250 years Vacheron Constantin has been blending history with innovation and because of these inherent qualities, Vacheron Constantin became one of the preferred suppliers of haute horology and high jewellery timepieces to the Maharajas in the 19th century. Vacheron Constantin can first trace their ties to the Indian market through an order made by J.G. Hanhart from Kolkata in 1849. In the following years, many more fine watches were ordered by Maharajas, such as those owned by H.H. Maharaja Sahib Bahadur, H.H. the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, H.H. Maharaja Rana Bahadur of Dholpur and H.H. the Maharaja of Patiala.

The photographic portrait is never truly opaque and behind the façade of splendid dress and gleaming jewels, we glimpse a rare human side to the sitters. As the historian E. Jaiwant Paul noted, ‘The princes of India were undoubtedly one of the great anachronisms of the twentieth century. Among them were enlightened rulers and profligate princes, saints and scoundrels, heroes, charmers and eccentrics’. The Maharajas in these photographs, whose lineage can be traced back for centuries, mark the end of an epoch in India’s history of ruling principalities. Besides the fabulous palaces, extraordinary jewels and inspired legends that these individuals left behind, we have their photographs, some of which are on display here.

Guidelines for Research Paper Submission

Selection of papers for presentation and discussion will be based on a detailed abstract of about 300 words the last date of receiving which is 15th December 2011. The abstract must include name of the author, title of the paper, area of research, methodology, major results, key references and contact details of the author. Your proposal may come in the form of either a PDF, or a word document. An individual shall submit up to three abstracts. Once the abstract is approved, the author may submit the detailed research paper the last date for which is 31 December 2011.The abstract should concisely convey the meaning of the paper. The text should be written in simple, concise, and effective language. The content of the paper should be new or original. Information presented must be valid, and the research methods described should be appropriate. Papers that deal with subject matter outside the general area of interest of the conference will not be considered. The content must not have been published elsewhere. In some cases, however, papers may be accepted that have been submitted to or published by other organizations, provided the author has secured the necessary clearances and permissions. Such cases will be handled individually.

NID faculty gets C’wealth Fellowship in photography

Ahmedabad: Faculty of National Institute of Design (NID) Deepak John Mathewwill become the first Indian to receive a Commonwealth Fellowship in the field of photography. Mathew has been awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship to conduct a three-months-long research in UK.

“Only one person from each profession is selected from a country and it is an honor to receive the award,” said Mathew.

Mathew’s research is on developing a ‘Programme in practice-based-Phd in Photography Design’ through the fellowship.

“I will be exploring how the works of a professional photographer can be developed to become a Phd. There is a dearth of academic materials in photography, particularly Indian photography. Through such an effort, professionals get a Phd degree and their works will be systematically documented ,” said Mathew. TNN

INTRODUCTION:
The following proposed workshop is designed to help photography professionals to get hands on training on Architectural photography practice, to improve their skills and techniques on this area of specialization in photography
There will be a series of talks and demonstrations and field trips to demonstrate and practice different methods of architectural photography. Discussing the different types of cameras, formats, lenses, light metering, etc will help the photographer in understanding the complexities of this genre. Participants will learn the use of large format cameras, tilt and shift technique to do perspective correction, use of specialist lenses, panorama making and basic post processing on Photoshop to do perspective correction. Learning and applying these techniques will allow them to create good quality architectural photographs. Proper planning is essential for consistent quality in the photographs. Once these techniques are learned, they can be quickly and consciously implemented into the successful architectural photograph. Introduction to shooting exteriors and interior spaces with digital photography will help will help a photographer to start making it a profession.
Thus, the Architectural Photographic Workshop is to give you training in to a specialized profession.

He has an experience spanning over 20 years in professional photography, painting and graphics. He has received many awards and exhibited his work in many international and national exhibitions. His interests include history of art, colour and form, illustration, printmaking and painting apart from photography.

The programme will be of three days. Please note that the workshop will be highly intensive and so you are requested to keep all the evenings except the first day free for the workshop sessions.

Ashna Singh, director of Ashna Gallery, New Delhi is pleased to announce the opening of ‘Lens-ing It’, an exclusive photography show curated by the well known curator and art critic, JohnyML.

‘Lens-ing It’ opens on 29th April 2011 at the Ashna Gallery, 369 CRC Building, MG Road, Sultanpur, New Delhi. A seminar on photography will also take place on the same day at the gallery from 10 am onwards.

The seminar will have Prof.Vinay Lal of Delhi University presenting a key note paper on "Representing Gandhi: The Practices and Politics of Visual Culture". The participating artists will also make audio visual presentations during the seminar.

Participating artists are Alex Fernandes, Ram Rahman, Sunil Gupta, Vivek Vilasini, Abul Kalam Azad, Deepak John Mathew, Anup Mathew Thomas and Manisha Gera Baswani.

“Photography has always been there in the field of fine arts but has always been treated lesser to other forms of art. Today, in the globalized world, photographs have become the message carriers of change. Photographs speak to the people directly and the photography artists have become all the more aware of their worth as meaning makers. For me photographing is a political act,” says JohnyML, curator of ‘Lens-ing It’.

‘Lens-ing It’ has ‘series’ as thematic orientation. Each artist in this show presents a set of works that is done with the ‘same mood, sense of reflection and ideological perspective’ within a limited span of time or within a prolonged period of travel and work undertaken by the artist. The works cohesively hold and display the artists’ innate idea about their medium and the way they use it to ‘produce’ meaning.

Alex Fernandes, through his Tiatriste and Musicians series search for the archetypal images that form the cultural make up of an ethnic community. Through the existing popular and underground cultural forms, Alex identifies these archetypes amongst them and brings them within a studio situation to make them iconic figures within the visual cultural discourse.

Ram Rahman oeuvre is quite large and the series for this show is created out of the works done during the last couple of decades.

These works show politicians, cultural activists, artists, lawyers and so on as the main images in them. They create another idea of ‘Delhi’, which manifests in a multitude of forms, situations and people.

Sunil Gupta’s gender politics takes a very dramatic twist in ‘Lens-ing It’ as he decides to open his gaze upon a ‘lesbian’ couple; he captures the intimate moments between this loving pair both in their domestic and public contexts. Sunil Gupta’s gender positioning as a gay activist is underlined by his inclusive stance on this selection of images. The aggressive male gaze that we generally see in such pictures transforms into a co-traveler’s curious and compassionate registering.

Vivek Vilasini’s ‘Between One Shore and Several Others’ is one of the highly acclaimed series produced by the artist during the last ten years of his career. In this series, he painstakingly documents the people who have names that do not have anything to do with their location, personality or profession. Vivek recaptures the socio-political and cultural contexts in which these people came to have these names. The living people with ‘un-localized’ names achieve semi-iconic status in these works, ironically emphasizing the contradictions that they embody not only within their contexts but also in an exposed global scenario.

Abul Kalam Azad presents a series of sepia toned autobiographical pictures; these are not the pictures from a family album. However, the small little objects that are spread in and around his studio, partially abandoned by memory, when registered by the artist get the status of museum pieces. Seen in a Barthes-ean way, each of these objects in Azad’s series becomes an icont, which is culturally encoded and personally inscribed. They are the display items in a museum of memories.

Deepak John Mathew has two series of works in ‘Lens-ing It’ show. Done over a period of time, the first series has images from his home interior and the second one has images from a anthropological and historical museum. Seen simultaneously, they resonate with the same ideology, tendency and meaning. They preserve memories in certain ways but through various associations they also preserve the relationship between the extremes of love and violence.

Anup Mathew Thomas looks at the ways in which colonialism taken various manifestations in our contemporary personal lives. There are memories and myths that help the human beings to form an ‘idea’ about their own lives. These memories could be those of colonialism working in personal lives both as history and an ideological notion.

The images that Anup presents here have this history as a soft reminder of achievement and loss and at the same time how the notion of the same history works in an ideological level in our contemporary lives.

Manisha Gera Baswani’s series is all about her journey through the lives of the artists and art activists within context of their work places.

In these photographs, Manisha carefully collapses the idea of a secured private into the realm of a discursive public by capturing the most unguarded moments from their lives. The artist makes a silent intrusion in order to chronicle the lives and times of the cultural makers but at the same time by choosing her silent locations, the artist speaks of her idea of looking at artist making and presenting art both with in the public and private spheres.

Introduction
Advertising is an age-old thing. To sell any thing there needs to be an exaggerated show of the quality of the product so that the consumer will buy that product compared to the competitor’s product. Though in an ideal situation, the advertisement is supposed to project what the product is all about, the time has changed the way it has been used. It started from the street hawkers calling out the names of their products from the days when cities and markets began. Then there were signboards on the shops and street side sellers to press ads and the firs trade marks started. And handbills were distributed separately.
If we look at the history of advertisements, it dates back to ancient Rome. It continued in the middle ages too. During 17th century when newspapers started coming in different parts of the world, the newspaper ads started coming in. How ever the great break in advertising came only in 19th century when technology for mass production was sufficiently developed.
The field of advertisement saw a huge revolution when radio and TV were introduced. The press was covering only the literate crowd but the radio and TV covered the illiterate too. After 90s the Internet became one of the biggest tools for advertising. This has brought a big change in the way we look at images and build contexts to an idea.

Indian advertisements and stereotypes
There are certain elements attributed to India. One of the main things are that India has a tradition of using erotic images so its alright to have highly erotic images in the advertisements so that the ad becomes Indian.
There is an emphasis on Indian values (which are very religion biased and specific to certain communities) and it is projected as Indian because, by showing that it will be perceived as ‘Indian’ in a global scenario.
The Strategies used in India have undergone a major change in the recent years and there has been increased customization to the local culture. This is aimed at the rural people to get them into buying products of foreign companies

Safe In the City
An Exhibition by JAGORI

How do you experience your city? Do you wonder if your experience varies from the men you know?
Have you ever decided not to take a bus for fear of sexual harassment? Felt scared walking down a
dimly lit street, or driving home late at night? Has any of this impacted your ability to work, study, live
and move around freely in your city?
Women’s lack of safety in cities is a serious obstacle to achieving gender equality as it curtails their
mobility and limits their right to participate fully and freely as citizens. Among the various obstacles
affecting women’s rights is the inability to access the city due to badly planned and unsafe roads and
transportation systems. These physical factors are further highlighted by male dominated public spaces
and ideologies that prevent women from freely accessing different parts of the city.
JAGORI presents ‘Transportraits – Women and Mobility in the City’, an exhibition that aims to delve
deeper into this issue, and understand women’s actual experiences of navigating a city. It hopes to
include a range of voices; working class women living on the periphery of the city as well as middle
class women commuting to work in the heart of the city. The exhibit hopes to include also the voices
of the more vulnerable, such as girls, elderly women, disabled women, indigenous women, lesbian and
transsexual women, and those from ethnic and cultural minorities. Professional photographers and
artists will engage with the issue, alongside laypeople, and collectives such as Blank Noise and Lucida.
We invite you to share your experience as a woman (or thinking about a woman’s perspective if you
are a man) in whatever form you are most comfortable with – photographs (even those taken on a cell-
phone camera qualify), slogans, collages, illustrations, posters, cartoons or any other kind of scanned
artwork that you like.
Selected works will be displayed at the India Habitat Centre during the Third International
Conference

on Women’s Safety: Building Inclusive Cities which will take place on November 22–
24, 2010 in Delhi, India organised by JAGORI and Women in Cities International. The theme of
‘Building Inclusive Cities’ aims to highlight the strategic role of diverse urban actors in creating cities
that are more accessible and inclusive to all people, especially vulnerable groups. We plan to make the
exhibition a travelling one that will visit schools and colleges in Delhi and other Indian cities to enable
a larger public discourse around the issue.
Submission guidelines:
1. Images/Artworks must be submitted in digital format in highest possible resolution: transportraits@
lucida.in or prints marked ‘For Gauri Gill-Transportraits: Women and Mobility in the City’ must
be sent to JAGORI, B-114, Shivalik, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi 110 017, India, +91 11 2669 1219.

About JAGORI
JAGORI (meaning “awaken women”) founded in 1984 is a feminist documentation, training,
communication and resource centre. Its main objective is consciousness raising, awareness generation
and production of creative advocacy material on women’s rights. JAGORI has sought to address violence
against women (VAW) through direct interventions, campaigns and institutional and legal changes. The
Safe Delhi Campaign launched in 2004 has been aimed at challenging the gender exclusions and violence
that women (especially poor women) face in the city.
About the Curator:
Gauri Gill is a Delhi based photographer. Her work includes series such as ‘Notes from the Desert’, about
life among nomadic and rural communities in Western Rajasthan, and ‘The Americans’, a diaristic
account of Indian Immigrants in the United States. Her projects engage with questions of identity and
becoming, community and the individual self. Gill is a co-editor of Camerawork Delhi, a newsletter about
independent photography.
1-The Third International Conference on Women’s Safety is being organized as a collaboration between
JAGORI and Women in Cities International (Canada) along with a number of key international partners
including UN-Habitat, the Huairou Commission and UNIFEM. The first and second international
conferences were held in Montreal and Bogota respectively.

DOCUMENTARY AND ARCHITECTURE PHOTOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION
The proposed workshop intends to expose the participants to the specific genre of documentary and architecture photography and the specialized tools for the same.
The following proposed workshop is designed to help the people who have the basic knowledge in photography, to improve their skills in architecture and documentary photography, whether they are interested in Digital or Analogue photography
The series of talks and demonstrations and field trips are flexible and can be adjusted to the needs of the class, but will be focused on the aspects of documentary photography and architecture photography. The skill development will include the use of medium format camera, large format camera with perspective correction etc will help the photographer in understanding the creative use of each of them in better picture making in the context of architecture or documentary photography. Participants will learn the natural lighting, artificial lighting, perspective correction and composition. Learning and applying these skills will allow them to create photographs that properly represent the architecture. Introduction to documentary photography will help you to understand the styles, practices, ethics and methods of documentary photography. Proper planning is essential for consistent quality in the photographs although planning does not need to be laborious or time consuming. Once these skills are learned, they can be implemented to create a photograph, which serves the purpose. Introduction to a specialization will help a photographer to start working on it to make it his profession.
Thus, this is a Workshop to improve your skills and convert your interest and basic skills in photography to a specialization and a profession.

OBJECTIVES
• To expose the participants to the fundamentals of photography as a
tool for architectural photography and documentary photography.
• To develop an aesthetic quality with reference to “composing a
picture” with all its elements such as texture, light, form and space
etc.
• Introduction to Documentary photography
• To discuss the issues related to documentary photography in today’s
context.
• To develop ability to edit and select appropriate photographs for
final image selection to build a story.
• Introduction to Architecture Photography.
• To get an introduction to medium and large format photography
both digital and analogue.
• To develop proficiency in perspective correction with large format
camera and also with digital technology.
• Creating awareness on job opportunities and commercial viabilities
of the genre.
• Introduction to archival printing using digital technology for
enlargements and museum quality prints.

• Medium and Large format camera and its functions in the context of

• Basic Photoshop for architectural and documentary photography.
• Camera controls for better perspective correction in large format

• Different lens types and its use .
• Photographing buildings.
• Basics of composition.
• Introduction to documentary photography.
• Tips and tricks of street photography.
• Basics of digital image processing and printing.
• Editing your images and making final prints for Exhibition.

Practical
• Basics of documentary photography.
• The medium format 60X60mm SLR camera and how it works,
aperture, shutter speed and depth of field, the use of wide, normal
and tele lens and in medium format cameras.
• The medium format digital camera and how it works.
• Large format camera and perspective correction.
• The process of recording images to tell a story. This would be an
individual task and include shooting, editing and refinement of the
selected images.
• Field trip. To shoot architectural photography with the help of large
format and medium format digital camera.
• Digital printing. This is to give an exposure to the making of good
quality digital prints for exhibitions and selling to clients as fine art
photographs.

BENEFITS FOR THE PARTICIPANTS
• Gearing the participants to gain and edge by learning the skill of
medium and large format photography.
• Developing skills would involve a process of familiarizing the
specialised cameras used in documentary and architectural
photography.
• Getting to have hands on experience of high-end cameras. This will
help one to understand the technicalities of medium and large
format photography for architecture.
• Get to see different kinds of documentary photography practices.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The participant should have basic knowledge of photography and should have a keen interest in documentary or architectural photography. They should be familiar with the handling of digital or 35mm film camera.

ANCHOR FACULTY: Dr. Deepak John Mathew
A design Teacher and a practicing photographer living and working in India. Working as a professional photographer, Illustrator and painter. Deepak John Mathew is teaching at the National Institute of Design (NID). He has a PhD in Design Education and postgraduate degree in graphics. He has an experience spanning over 20 years in professional photography, painting and graphics. He has received many awards and exhibited his work in many international and national exhibitions. His interests include history of art, colour and form, illustration, printmaking and painting apart from photography.

Duration
The programme will be of five days. Please note that the workshop will be highly intensive and so you are requested to keep all the evenings except the first day free for the workshop sessions.

Intake
Participation will be limited to a maximum of twenty (on a first come first serve basis). Any and all in the creative field including designers, architects, managers, design professional, retailers, other professionals and students can benefit from this program. Others desiring to increase their sensitivity and creativity are also welcome. All that is needed is an open mind.

Introduction
Background and brief of the Course
NID is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. Here we aim to provide a stimulating and challenging learning environment for students drawn from a wide design application.
The PG Diploma program in Photography course provides students with a creative and intellectual environment to enable them to develop their personal aspirations within a community of their peers, and a broader network of artists, designers and other industry professionals.
Students come from a number of different academic backgrounds, including first degree courses in photography and wide variety of other fields including: (BFA/ B.Arch/ B.Des/ BVC/ B.Litt/ Graduation in Communication Media, Film & TV, Mass Media/ or Equivalent. /or Graduates in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience/ creative pursuits).
Photography design course enables ambitious graduate students to locate their work in relation to their photographic practice and to expand their potential to operate as professional artists and conduct further research. The course encourages students to intensify, challenge and contextualize their work.
This is a course, underpinned by a theoretical framework with instruction in research methodology and professional practice. It demands a high level of commitment to independent productive activity.
This PG Diploma programme aims to develop the students, creative, conceptual, practical, theoretical and critical abilities to a level that will enable them to practice as professional artists and undertake further research. The aims of the course are to enable students to produce a body of original work and to be able to contextualize the practice and theory of photography in relation to fine art, popular culture and the mass media, and to explore the social, cultural and critical issues involved in the practices of photographic representation.
It seeks to establish the relationship between theory and practice through structured units in both fields, enabling students to achieve an advanced level of critical, analytical and practical skills to further facilitate research-based work and enhance their professional profile.
Study units at the beginning of the course aim to equip students with an advanced knowledge of the debates that have shaped the practice of photography and the ability to place their work in the context of professional practice.
Through the study of both theory and practice units students will benefit from expanding knowledge an understanding of the relationship between these two areas and what role both theory and practice may take in their own developing works.
Units in the final phase of the course allow students to develop a sustained study in theory and practice as well as exploring the professional world of photography through the work placement unit. The combination of production, research, and critical reflection will fully equip students to undertake prolonged photographic projects, and if students wish, move on to research at Phil/PhD level once NID becomes a center of excellence.
The course runs over four semesters (2 year) full-time and offers the opportunity for students to undertake some part of the semester 2 of their course at an international institution of their choice, the course has a number of valuable international connections with institutions running Masters programmes worldwide and of particular interest is the new MFA in Photography at The University for the Creative arts at Farnham.
One of the most exciting aspects of photography is the variety of jobs available in the field, ranging from highly specialized technical work to jobs that require creativity and visual literacy. Some of the fields that a photographer can get employed are documentary photography, industrial photography, commercial photography, portrait photography, advertising photography, fine-art photography and fashion photography.

Eligibility
The PG Diploma Programme Photography course is intended for graduates who have an appropriate background and who wish to undertake further study in practice, theory and criticism of photography. Students come from a number of different academic backgrounds, including first degree courses in photography and wide variety of other fields including: fine art, communication, social sciences, humanities, cultural and media studies, as well as those who are employed or self-employed in a number of areas related to photography.
The screening will be based on NID’s admission procedure and the assessment of portfolios consisting of photographs demonstrating their conceptual and technical skills. Once shortlisted the students will be called for a personal interview.
Tuition fee
The tuition fee per year is going to be as per NID norms
For the Course NID and UCA have received the UKERI research grant that will help to develop the course, infrastructure, Library and Faculty and staff training for three years. We have received a grant of 50,000GBP for three years.

Placement opportunities
One of the most exciting aspects of photography is the variety of jobs available in the field, ranging from highly specialized, technical work to jobs that require creativity and Visual literacy. Some of the fields that a photographer can get employed are:
Press / News photography, Documentary photography, Commercial/ Industrial photography, Advertising photography, Fashion photography, Fine art photography and Industrial Photography etc
Conclusion
The course promotes a rigorous critical and contextual understanding of photographic image making within the framework of contemporary art and visual communication.
It offers students, the opportunities to place their work in the context of leading edge practice in their subject and to develop their skills to an advanced level appropriate for careers in the industries.

Inauguration of this exhibition was at 4.00 pm on Monday, 18th January 2010 at the Design Gallery by Prof. Sudhakar Nadkarni - Dean, Business Design, Welingkar Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai. The opening address was delivered by Mr. Pradyumna Vyas - Director, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

First of all congratulations to DJ. The full time 2-year PGDPD Photography Design course has been approved , both by the Governing council NID and for the dual degree (MFA, UCA) by UK validation panel.

Celebrating the occasion, "hallelujah"...
It is the right time to come up with the newsletter/magazine, where the main body of works are going to be regarding this approval, Kick starting our Indian history of Photography, International photography design conference to be held at 2010. With these special sections, we also will be having analog(by mahendra, ashok and valji bhais) and digital(from alekh's lens building)* series of demonstrations, as the usual sections. Foreword from DJ, notes from Sunil Gupta and Anna Fox are expected.
Also to include is a write up from Arunima about her experience with Raghu Rai (others will be followed in the subsequent release).
Also to include is Rahul's Tierney fellowship* work abstract, Latest NID's happenings, world's photography happenings, puzzles, quizzes, and fun advertisements.!!

Other than this there will be a section where all of us will have to be introduced, with a picture and 2-3 lines, about us. Then we will be needing to put some academic works/commissioned works, we had done till now.
Not much of time to operate at comfort.
We need such works from all of you, to be published. Kindly send in them, and also sending your mugshots. We can also put our caricatures alongwith them.

The exhibition FACE UP explores the relationship they have both developed to the photograph as portrait, the term Face Up suggests a facing up to truths or a sense of landing upright in the right place. In much of their work Gupta and Fox use a very controlled approach to photographing their subjects, directing them quite specifically in order to explore and extend their radical ideas, revealing aspects of life that normally remain concealed. Both photographers work from the starting point of the personal and the private; their work questions past representations & raises new questions and dilemma’s concerned with race, gender and identity.

a known cultural context, the unfamiliar culture
is viewed from an objective distance through
the keen eye of the camera, generating insights
and revealing nuances that at times go
unnoticed even by the accustomed local. Driven
by the desire to understand and interpret this
unique experience, "13" photographers explore
concepts like identity and nativity through their
photography, in the process making a
semblance out of this cultural displacement.
The language they use varies from the
straightforward aesthetics of documentary or
street photograph, to the deadpan aesthetics of
the posed portrait, to the intuitive outcomes
obtained from the alchemical photographic
printing process. Spanning photographic genres,
this display offers the viewer an intimate
dialogue with a distant culture.
This photography display is an outcome of a month long student exchange program between
National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India and University for the creative Arts, Farnham, United
Kingdom.
The PGC program in Photography Design at NID provides students with a creative and intellectual
environment to enable them to develop their personal aspirations within a community of their
peers, and a broader network of artists, designers and other industry professionals. Students are
expected to have clear ideas and ambition to make a strong creative statement. Building on
individualized photographic practice, the course promotes a rigorous critical and contextual
understanding of photographic image making within the framework of contemporary art and visual
communication.
Photography at Farnham is one of the Britain's first photographic degree courses and has a long and
significant history. The exchange aims to expose students to the contemporary perceptions and
practices in photography so that they could place their own photographic practice within a global
context.
The display opens on 13th July at 5:00 PM with an Introduction in Auditorium and continues till the
16th of July in Aquarium.

Ahmedabadi's got a rare opportunity to meet two masters in the same venue. An exhibition of paintings and prints were opening aat Amdavad ni gufa (Hussain Doshi Gufa) . Mani da was there to open the show. SH Raza was there to attend the show. People were busy taking pictures and autographs. The show was followed by a film on Manida.
I think it was one of its kind opportunity for art lovers to meet these two great masters.
What I love is the simplicity of these people.

Stephen Huyler is an art historian ,Cultural Anthropologist ,photographer and Author. "Daughters of India is his 5th book .Huyler's photographs have appeared in many exhibitions,including those he has curated in major International Museums internationally..
He was at NID auditorium for a talk. After the talk he came to photography design class room and spent some time with the photography students .He shared his experiences as a photographer,writer and his experience as a student of photography. It was an enriching session in which his observations on photography as a medium and and as a tool were very valuable.
Some of the issues discussed were ,the ethics of photography,consent in photo-documentation,the rapo between the photographer and the subject, the importance of editing, conceiving a subject,approaching a publisher and the struggles of being a writer and a photographer.

Rahul Gandhi came to NID today in an informal visit. He ate in the mess had an informal chat with the students and the community. The discussion was very interesting. He was surprised to see that the students are asking a lot of questions. He is indeed an intelligent guy with a lot of training. I would say his understanding of Design was very poor.he could have come a bit more prepared.
What I liked was the commandos. poor guys they are struggling to give him some security and the students are least bothered about them.

A CRUISE in side a VOLCANO Crater

As I was making my plans for New Zealand, as part of the research I was browsing through the Google Earth to see the place in advance. There I just saw this curious flower shaped corner in the South island. It looked like mountains and water in circular foundation. The whole thing looked so beautiful from the aerial view and it was protruding out in the sea. I never knew that I would be going there.
I was going to Christchurch to deliver a lecture and to conduct a workshop for the faculties of Design and Art College in Christchurch. I knew that New Zealand is a beautiful place and I kept a large percentage of my time for local travel.
I reached Christchurch and once I was settled with my stay, I started looking forward for my exploration of scenic beauty of the place.

I started the next day to Akaroa, which was the place I saw on Google Earth as a flower shaped area. The driver was an interesting person, he was talking to me continuously, and each place when we cross, he will give a long story about the place. So effectively he became my guide too in the trip to Arakoa. It was about 75 km drive. The landscape is very beautiful with slopes and grasslands. On the road there was an interesting sign board; because of the speed of the car, I could not read it. The driver explained to me that it was regarding “POSSUM”. Possum is s small squirrel like animal, which was brought to New Zealand. It got multiplied and the number has dangerously increased. The Government has decided to bring them under control as it was eating away all the crops. Though Possum fur was used for making coats, it had never developed as a major industry.

I was just thinking that such a cute little animal that never wanted to harm anybody, but humans treated him as an enemy.

On the way we stopped for coffee and it was such a beautiful view & we spent almost an hour just enjoying the scenic beauty of the place, sipping a hot cup of coffee. The driver told me that he gets a free coffee when he brings a customer to the place.
Once we reached Akaroa, it was far more beautiful than I had expected. It was a small town with old styled houses. They were considerably different from the houses I saw in Christchurch.

Akaroa was the only French Colony in New Zealand. When the French settlers came there in 1838, Jean Francois, Lang Los, Commander of the Whaling ship, reached Akaroa, he decided to make a settlement there in 1840, after a long journey in the sea when they came back they were surprised to see a Union Jack there. The local story says that the French were tricked by the British and made them come under the British rule.

But today Akaroa is the only attempted French colony in New Zealand. They still have a French flag fluttering as a reminiscence of the by gone era. And the lanes and street have French names.

After strolling through the streets of this small town I went to the small harbor where the entire tourist cruises are organized. The place is famous for the smallest dolphins in the world; Hectors dolphins and a variety of bird life.

They offer a variety of activities including cruising in the volcanic crater. One of the most exciting things is to swim with the dolphins in the crater. They will take you in a speed launch and you can jump next to Hector Dolphins and swim with them, there are trained staffs to help you and save you in the case of an emergency. For those who wanted to stay dry can spend time on beautiful beaches and relax under the Sun. I took the boat cruise to go and see dolphins.

Once you start your journey you will forget you are in this world. All around you is the volcanic mountains. Occasionally you will see seals relaxing on the rocks like lazy person.

The landscape is so beautiful and the water is pure and blue. Cool breeze and unpolluted air. You will feel that you are in some other world. There is a narrator I n cruise who gives a running commentary. Suddenly the dolphin’s come out of water and shoots in the air. The come one after another. If you are of the adventurous type and reserved for swimming with dolphins then the trained staff will let you jump in to the water and you can swim with these animals.

Once you go further the color of the water changes and once side becomes open. You can see the sea on the other side. The lava formations look like large forts.
Once you go closer there are a variety of birds and seals on the shore.
After a long boat cruise when you come back, at the Harbor there are many restaurants, you get all kinds of food. I heard you could get “curry” Indian food too. But the specialty of the place is fish preparations.

After my lunch, I strolled a bit for shopping. The shops are aimed at the tourists, so most of the things for sale are souvenirs and gift articles. One of the most interesting observations was that most of the gift items were made in China!!

Akaroa is Canterbury’s oldest township, which has a history of whaling harbor; and the British and the French colonized colorful Maori history till it.
On the way back to Christchurch, we stopped at the traditional cheese making factory where you can see the traditional method of making variety of cheese. Their specialty was “blue cheese”.
If you are going there, carry some warm clothes as the cool breeze will be blowing, sunscreens and hat is a must and of course the “camera” as you can shoot some very beautiful calendar pictures on this trip as during the cruise you will see some wild life and many sea caves and volcanic cliffs. The Akaroa Harbor was a live volcano nine million years ago, there you can see many ancient lava flows and there is one cliff, which has a 500 feet face.

How to reach there
From India to Singapore and Singapore to Christchurch flights are available.
From Christchurch you can take a cab or coach services are available. Nowadays you can cycle from Christchurch to Akarao too. The cruise costs around $60. Food is not very expensive $15 to 20 for a simple lunch near the beach.

Stay
You can stay at Christchurch or there are many hotels and motels in Akaroa, it self-costing $150 to $350 per night. You can get a variety of stay options like apartments, bed and breakfast, cottages, farm stay, holiday parks, hotels, motels, retreats and luxury options too.

Once you are there, there are many things to do –
For nature lovers there are harbor cruises and eco tours. For people who are interested in history there is a museum and historical churches, there are organized walks to see all these.
For those who want to do shopping, there is a lot of scope for shopping, beauty therapy, massage, galleries and gift shops. Apart from this there are a lot of activities like touring, hiking, farm towns, cinema, open gardens, walks, horse treks and fishing trips.
So pack your bag.

ELIGIBILTY CRITERIA

Students coming from a number of different academic backgrounds, including first degree courses in photography and wide variety of other fields including: (BFA/B.Arch/B.Des/B.Litt/Graduation in Commn. Media, Film and TV, Mass Media/or Equivalent/ or Graduates in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience/ creative pursuits).

The screening will be based on the assessment of portfolio consisting of photographs or creative expressions demonstrating their conceptual and technical skills. Once shortlisted the students will be called for personal interview.

Selected candidates are expected to have basic equipments such as digital SLR/Analog SLR, required for their work. Specialist equipment and other facilities will be provided by the institute for the course.

FEE for the non- residential course: Rs. 2.5 lacs

Overseas travel/stay is entirely optional and will be extra estimated to be approximately (travel to and fro Ahmedabad -London-Ahmedabad) Rs.25,000 .

For residential facility students can opt for NID’s Infocity Hostel for which payment for room and mess will be extra and is estimated at Rs. 36,000 per annum

Look at this typical Industrial shot. Looks like a simple shot. But the real machine if you see then you will know the difference. The room is dimly lit and the walls are gray. The Machine has no color other than steel and gray. So it is a gray machine in a gray background. So to solve this issue I have decided to use colors to the light and to add some attributes to the machine through colored light. There are at least 10 lights used to light up the machine and the background. The machine is in a glass case and it cannot be opened for some reason. So any where you put a light or camera it is reflecting in the glass. The biggest nightmare was to crawl under the machine to fix a light to give the red glow to the plastic sheets.

Hasselblad has announced the H3DII-50, its latest medium format camera and back. The H3DII-50 is the same camera as before, it's really the back that's new. The news is, obviously, that this back features a standard sized 36X48mm with a new 50 Megapixel Kodak sensor. Hasselblad is indicating delivery in Q1 2009.

I was testing the hassalblad H3D II 39 the latest bad boy on the street. The results are mind blowing. Dynamic range is grater than film (we are shooting in raw) and the 8 bit file size is 118 mb only.

When we look at photography as an art of making photographs; we may look at some of the following for analysis, the photographer, the photograph and the viewer. The photographer falls into two categories:

The first kind picks up the camera and shoots without thinking. The main purpose of this activity is to capture that moment and sharing with family or friends. The aesthetics does not play any role in it. The photograph will have some personal memories associated to it and most of the time it is looked through and see only what they depict than the aesthetics of photographs.

The second category of photographer sees the subject and an idea is formed in the mind the composition and positioning of elements in the frame is visualized before clicking. The photographer thinks what the picture is going to communicate beyond what is depicted in the picture. There is a conscious effort in the thought process and the positioning of the elements in the result of that.
